A 59-year-old miner was taken into custody on Tuesday after he was found in possession of over a pound of suspected cannabis during a stop-and-search operation at the Itaballi Police Checkpoint.

According to a statement from Police Headquarters, officers halted a motor vehicle bearing trade plates as part of their routine checks. During the search, they discovered a bulky parcel concealed in a music box, containing leaves, seeds, and stems believed to be cannabis.
The suspect, identified as a miner from Stanleytown, West Bank Demerara, was arrested on the scene and transported to the Bartica Police Station along with the suspected narcotics.
The cannabis was weighed in the presence of the suspect, totaling 571 grams (approximately 1.2 pounds), before being logged as evidence.
The miner remains in police custody as investigations are ongoing, and authorities continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
