Miner Injured in Shooting Incident at Providence

Randy Bacchus, a 23-year-old miner, was injured in a shooting incident in Providence, East Bank Demerara, on August 6. According to Police Headquarters, the shooting occurred at approximately 11:50 PM in front of Lot 2242 Plantation Drive, New Migrant Scheme.

Bacchus had recently arrived from Bartica on August 4 to visit family. On the night of the incident, he reportedly entered his bedroom around 11:30 PM and spent about ten minutes inside before going back outside. Shortly thereafter, he returned to the house and claimed he had been shot, though he did not provide specific details about the incident.

He was transported to the Diamond Regional Hospital, where a doctor diagnosed him with a gunshot wound to his left upper thigh. After receiving treatment, he was sent home.

During police interviews, Bacchus provided conflicting accounts of the shooting and expressed a desire to return to Bartica without involving the police. His hands were swabbed for gunpowder residue, but he declined to provide further information.

The police processed the scene and recovered two suspected 9mm spent shells, which were photographed and packaged for analysis. Several individuals were questioned, but no useful information has been obtained regarding the incident. The investigation is ongoing.
