Minister of Home Affairs Calls for Calm Following Death of 16-Year-Old

Minister of Home Affairs, Hon. Oneidge Walrond, has issued a formal statement calling for public calm as investigations commence into the tragic death of 16-year-old Aftaz King.

King died on Thursday evening, June 25, 2026, during a police pursuit on the Princeton Access Road in Corentyne, Berbice. The incident has sparked significant local concern and allegations regarding the conduct of the officers involved.

In her address, Minister Walrond expressed her condolences to the teenager’s family and emphasized that the government is treating the matter with the highest level of seriousness.

“I extend my deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of 16-year-old Aftaz King. My thoughts and prayers are with them during this time of profound grief,” the Minister stated.

Addressing the public’s call for justice, Minister Walrond assured that the inquiry would be rigorous, transparent, and independent. “I wish to assure the family and the public that this matter will be the subject of a thorough, impartial, and transparent investigation. Every aspect of the incident will be carefully examined, and if any criminal or disciplinary culpability is established, it will be dealt with swiftly and in accordance with the law. No one is above accountability.”

The Minister specifically appealed to residents in the Skeldon area and surrounding communities to refrain from taking matters into their own hands while the investigation proceeds.

“I also appeal to the residents… to remain calm, refrain from actions that may endanger lives and allow the investigative process to proceed without interference,” she said. “I understand the grief and concern being expressed, but it is essential that the truth is established through a comprehensive and independent investigation.”

The Office of Professional Responsibility (OPR) is currently conducting the probe into the events leading up to the crash.
