Education Minister Sonia Parag has firmly rejected allegations that she breached confidentiality by referencing sensitive information regarding Opposition Member of Parliament Gordon Barker’s attendance record during her recent presentation in the Budget debate. Barker, a teacher and representative of the We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) Party, has faced scrutiny following the Minister’s comments.

In her address, Minister Parag suggested that Barker should “lead by example,” highlighting his record of repeated lateness as a teacher. This remark has drawn criticism from the Guyana Teachers’ Union (GTU), which described it as a “vile, disrespectful, and politically motivated attack” that undermines the dignity of the teaching profession. The GTU has called for an apology from the Minister.
Responding to the backlash, Minister Parag stated, “No breach of confidential or sensitive information occurred at any point during my contribution to the Parliamentary Budget Debate.” She emphasized that the public conduct and professional records of elected officials are rightfully subject to scrutiny within the National Assembly.
“Parliamentary debate, by its nature, involves accountability and transparency, particularly regarding public service delivery,” she explained.
Minister Parag categorically dismissed any claims that her remarks were politically motivated or aimed at undermining the teaching profession’s dignity. She argued that her comments were meant to advocate for accountability, improved standards, and the best outcomes for children in the education system.
The ongoing discourse highlights the tensions between government officials and opposition representatives regarding accountability and standards in education.
