Ministry of Education Addresses Baseless Claims on NGSA Results

  • News

The Ministry of Education has responded to recent statements made by a political candidate from the We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) party regarding the National Grade Six Assessment (NGSA) results. Ms. Tabitha Sarabo Haley has made allegations suggesting that requests for reviews of marks indicate irregularities in the NGSA results.

The Ministry emphasizes that every responsible examination system allows for review opportunities, and requests for reviews occur annually. The number of review requests this year remains consistent with previous years: 258 in 2020, 261 in 2021, 241 in 2022, 185 in 2023, 267 in 2024, and 257 in 2025. Therefore, this year’s figures are not unusual.

Furthermore, Ms. Haley’s claims mirror those made by her party leader, who alleged a decline in NGSA performance. In reality, Guyana has achieved its best NGSA results to date, with every subject showing improvement. The percentage of students passing with 50% or more increased from 49% in 2020 to 64% in 2025.

These improvements are a result of significant investments in education, including building schools, training teachers, providing textbooks, school feeding programs, the ‘Because We Care’ Cash Grant, and universal access to learning materials through the Guyana Learning Channel.

It is important to note that the Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC) is responsible for setting, managing, and marking the NGSA. Attempting to discredit the results for political gain undermines the achievements of every student and adult who has received CXC certification.

Such actions could have serious repercussions for our young people as they pursue job opportunities and tertiary education, both locally and internationally.

We urge political parties and candidates to act responsibly and avoid making claims that could harm the children and youth of our nation in their quest for political office.
