Ministry of Education Concludes 2025 “Because We Care” Cash Grant Distribution

The Ministry of Education has officially wrapped up the national distribution of the 2025 “Because We Care” Cash Grant and the School Uniform and Supplies Grant. This year, over 205,000 students across Guyana benefited from the initiative, which disbursed approximately $11.28 billion to parents and guardians. Each child received a total of $55,000, combining the two grants to support families and ensure children are prepared for their education.

The distribution encompassed all eleven education districts, including Georgetown. Notably, Region 3 (Essequibo Islands-West Demerara) recorded over $1.53 billion disbursed to the parents of 27,830 students. Region 6 (East Berbice-Corentyne) followed closely, with $1.26 billion issued for 23,023 students. Region 4C (East Coast of Demerara) received $1.23 billion for 22,465 students, while Region 4B (East Bank of Demerara) provided $1.07 billion to 19,461 students.

Regions 1 (Barima-Waini) and 2 (Pomeroon-Supenaam) received $797 million and $706 million, respectively. Other regions, including Region 5 (Mahaica-Berbice), Region 7 (Cuyuni-Mazaruni), and Region 9 (Upper Takatu-Upper Essequibo), received $638 million, $447 million, and $595 million, respectively. Region 8 (Potaro-Siparuni), with 4,373 enrolled students, received $240 million, while Region 10 (Upper Demerara-Berbice) saw $646 million disbursed to 11,747 students. Georgetown accounted for the highest single distribution total, with $2.1 billion reaching the parents of 38,284 students.

The Ministry of Education extends its gratitude to Regional Education Officers, District Education Officers, head teachers, teachers, and support staff who worked diligently to ensure a smooth and successful grant distribution. Their efforts were crucial in the timely rollout of this significant national program.

Recognizing that some parents may have missed their collection during the scheduled distribution dates, the Ministry will announce a mop-up period shortly to facilitate those who were unable to pick up their grants.

The “Because We Care” cash grant represents a direct investment in the future of Guyana’s children. It reflects the Government’s commitment to equity in education and aims to alleviate the financial burden on families, ensuring that every child has the opportunity to learn, grow, and thrive. The Ministry remains dedicated to the success of this initiative and the broader goal of delivering quality education to all.
