The Ministry of Health has expressed regret over an unfortunate incident that occurred at the New Amsterdam Hospital involving a patient, Ms. Kelisha Pestano, aged 26.

On January 14, 2026, at 22:24 hours, Ms. Pestano presented to the hospital with complaints of lower back pain and mild vaginal bleeding, without uterine contractions. After thorough assessment, she was diagnosed with a threatened abortion involving a previable fetus and was admitted for ongoing care.
During her admission, Ms. Pestano developed uterine contractions and unfortunately progressed to a spontaneous miscarriage in the early hours of January 15, resulting in the delivery of a previable fetus. Initially assessed visually, the fetus was presumed to be deceased. A previable fetus is defined as one unable to survive outside the uterus, even with medical intervention, hence fetal resuscitative efforts were not deemed necessary. The fetus was subsequently handed over to Ms. Pestano’s relatives.
However, relatives later observed signs of life in the fetus, prompting its return to the hospital. Supportive care was provided, but despite these efforts, the fetus was ultimately declared deceased.
The Ministry of Health acknowledges the significant distress this incident has caused and extends heartfelt condolences to Ms. Pestano and her family during this challenging time.
In response to this incident, the Ministry has launched a review to evaluate the circumstances and ensure that established clinical protocols were followed. The goal is to identify any areas for improvement in patient care and communication, and appropriate actions will be taken based on the findings of this review.
