The official opening of the $6.6 billion Lima Regional Hospital on August 22, 2025, is set to transform public healthcare delivery on the Essequibo Coast, significantly enhancing medical services for residents.

Constructed by China CAMC Engineering Co., Ltd. and China National Machinery Industry Corporation (SINOMACH), the hospital is equipped with state-of-the-art facilities designed to provide world-class medical care and reduce the need for residents to travel to Georgetown for treatment.
“This hospital will be the hospital of service to our people,” stated Regional Chairman Vilma De Silva, who hailed the occasion as “historic.”
The Lima Regional Hospital features three operating theatres, a specialized birthing suite, a fully equipped Intensive Care Unit (ICU), a high dependency unit, a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), a dialysis unit, blood banking facilities, and a modern laboratory capable of performing over 150 different tests. Additional amenities include a 24-hour pharmacy and emergency department, as well as dental, ophthalmology, and audiology services.
In terms of technology, the hospital boasts digital X-ray capabilities, two ultrasound machines, a CT scan machine, an oxygen plant, and 75 inpatient beds. Notably, it also supports telemedicine, allowing patients to access faster diagnoses and specialized care.
“There was a time when living far from the capital meant living far from healthcare. That time is coming to an end,” said President Dr. Irfaan Ali, positioning the Lima Regional Hospital, alongside other new regional facilities, as part of Guyana’s ambition to lead in digital health across the Caribbean Community (CARICOM).
To ensure that the hospital meets high standards, President Ali announced the implementation of a Quality Assurance Unit and emphasized the importance of rewarding healthcare workers for their dedication and sacrifices. “Those in healthcare who are giving more and sacrificing deserve to be rewarded,” he stated.
Looking to the future, President Ali urged medical professionals to take advantage of training opportunities over the next three years and promised a strengthened welfare and benefits structure to encourage the return of Guyanese healthcare workers from abroad. “The best wealth we can ever create is the health of our people,” he asserted.
Minister of Health Dr. Frank Anthony also highlighted that every head of department at the hospital will be a specialized doctor, calling the new facility “a concrete step in the journey towards a world-class health system made accessible to all Guyanese.”
With the opening of the Lima Regional Hospital, the government aims to significantly enhance healthcare access and quality for residents of the Essequibo Coast and beyond.
