Nandlall Criticizes Azruddin Mohamed’s Claims of Political Persecution

News

Attorney General Anil Nandlall has publicly rebuffed Azruddin Mohamed’s latest assertions of political victimization by the Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA), stating that Mohamed is “incapable of appreciating reality.” This statement comes in response to Mohamed’s portrayal of himself as a victim rather than acknowledging the repercussions of U.S. sanctions imposed on him and his family.

Nandlall highlighted that the sanctions, enforced by the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) of the U.S. Department of the Treasury since June 2024, effectively prohibit the Mohameds and their businesses from conducting transactions. The sanctions stem from serious international financial crimes linked to the Mohameds, for which they have been indicted in a Florida court.

“The expectation that he can operate his businesses as if it’s ‘business as usual’ clearly indicates he is either living in a bubble or simply cannot grasp the situation,” Nandlall stated. He pointed out that commercial banks and insurance companies made the prudent decision to sever ties with the Mohameds to protect themselves from potential repercussions.

Further criticizing Mohamed’s claims, Nandlall emphasized that the Guyana Police Force is duty-bound to enforce the laws of the country, which includes compliance for vehicle registration and insurance. “When the police act to enforce these laws, it’s labeled as persecution by the Mohameds, a claim not available to ordinary citizens,” he added.

The attorney general also referenced a comprehensive investigation into the Mohameds by the GRA concerning alleged gold smuggling and billions in tax evasion. He disclosed that a lawful block was imposed on the transfer of motor vehicles under investigation, yet some vehicles were reportedly transferred under questionable circumstances.

“As the GRA continues to investigate, any attempts by the Mohameds to evade these actions will meet legal consequences,” Nandlall affirmed, reiterating that the laws of Guyana apply equally to all citizens, regardless of their status.
