During a session on the estimates for the 2026 fiscal year, Minister Browne-Shadeek emphasized the ministry’s commitment to improving facilities for Amerindian residents. The new hostel is designed to accommodate up to 350 individuals.

“We already have a preliminary design,” she stated, adding that the next step involves public tendering to select a consultant who will create detailed architectural drawings for the project. “When we secure that, we will have funds for the mobilization to begin construction,” she explained in response to questions from Opposition Members of Parliament about the project’s progress.

In addition to the new hostel, approximately $31 million has been allocated for the maintenance of the existing Amerindian Hostel located on Princess Street, Georgetown.

These allocations are part of a broader budget of $7.5 billion approved for the Ministry of Amerindian Affairs, aimed at driving sustainable development initiatives across more than 200 Amerindian communities nationwide. The ministry’s efforts reflect a commitment to enhance living conditions and support development within these communities.
