In a significant legal ruling, 26-year-old Kevin Walton from Angoy’s Avenue, New Amsterdam, Berbice, has been sentenced to four years in prison for trafficking narcotics valued at over $9.1 million. Walton appeared before Magistrate Allan Wilson at the Mahaicony Magistrates’ Court on Friday, where he pled guilty to the charges against him.

The court proceedings detailed that on November 25, 2025, Walton was found in possession of 30,625 grams of cannabis intended for trafficking at Harmony Hall, Mahaicony Village, East Coast Demerara. He was unrepresented during the trial and quickly admitted to his guilt.

The prosecution outlined the circumstances of Walton’s arrest, stating that police acted on a tip-off which led them to Harmony Hall. Upon their arrival, they discovered Walton and a female accomplice in a parked vehicle, PRR 5752. When questioned, both claimed they were merely “hanging out.” Although initial searches yielded no illegal items, further inspection of the car’s trunk revealed three black garbage bags containing seven compressed parcels of cannabis.

Both individuals were arrested, but Walton took full responsibility for the drugs, asserting that the woman was unaware of their presence. Following the discovery, Walton and the cannabis were transported to the Mahaicony Police Station, where the narcotics were officially weighed and confirmed to have a street value of $9.1 million.

After considering the case, Magistrate Wilson asked Walton if he had any final words, to which Walton remained silent. The Magistrate then imposed a fine of $500,000 and sentenced Walton to four years in prison. The ruling elicited emotional reactions from Walton’s family members, who were present in the courtroom.

As Walton was led away, Magistrate Wilson offered a somber reminder, urging him to use his time in prison for self-reflection and to reconsider his life choices. “You are only 26 years old; you destroyed your future. You threw away your whole future,” he emphasized, underlining the serious implications of drug trafficking.
