Following a challenging defeat in the recent general and regional elections, the A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) is refocusing its efforts to strengthen its representation in the Region Democratic Councils (RDCs) across the country. In the East Berbice-Corentyne region, the party has announced its three RDC councillors: Mehalai Natasha McAlmont, Colin Emmanuel Moore, and Candy Ramona Stewart.

Mehalai McAlmont, an educator at Tutorial Academy Secondary School, is determined to take a balanced approach while holding the ruling People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) accountable in the RDC. She plans to address critical issues, particularly what she perceives as political bias from the government against her party at the local government level.
“Too many times, the PPP government silences our people and shows bias in resource allocation for the councils we manage,” McAlmont stated. She highlighted the struggles of the APNU-run Hogstye/Lancaster Neighbourhood Democratic Council (NDC), which she claims is under-resourced compared to PPP-supported NDCs that receive preferential treatment.
“The NDCs we manage are poorly run due to limited resources, and we cannot solely rely on rates and taxes,” she added.
Despite significant losses to Azruddin Mohamed’s We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) party, McAlmont remains confident in APNU’s ability to keep the government accountable. She expressed her admiration for party leader Aubrey Norton, stating, “If you’re saying Aubrey Norton is the problem, I would beg to differ. His leadership has allowed young people like me to flourish and approach him with concerns.”
As McAlmont prepares to take her seat on the RDC, she aims to ensure that the voices of her constituents are heard and that the government is held accountable for its actions.
