A fire early Tuesday morning completely destroyed a newly-constructed house owned by 30-year-old fish vendor Michael Ramnarine, just days before he and his family were set to move in. Ramnarine had been living with his wife and three children in his mother-in-law’s home for the past nine years and was eager to transition into their new residence this weekend.

In March, Ramnarine purchased a plot of land at the Chesney New Housing Scheme and began construction on a two-storey, three-bedroom house, which was nearly finished. However, on Tuesday morning, he received a call around 12:30 AM informing him that his house was ablaze. He arrived at the scene shortly after 12:45 AM to find the structure engulfed in flames.
Believing the fire to be an act of arson, Ramnarine noted, “We don’t have electricity or anything connected to the house, and there is no house nearby.” He expressed his anguish over the loss, emphasizing the hard work and savings he had invested into the construction.
On the day before the fire, Ramnarine had plastered part of the lower flat’s concrete wall and planned to paint the exterior on Friday. He had also intended to buy tiles and a sink for the kitchen, which he hoped to install on Thursday.
“I struggled to get that far,” he lamented, detailing how he had purchased materials as he earned money from his fish vending business.
The police are currently investigating the incident. Anyone with information or who wishes to contact Ramnarine can reach him at 706-1218.
