Following President Dr. Irfaan Ali’s announcement to remove all taxes on sanitary products if the People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPP/C) is re-elected, Vice President Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo clarified that the government will engage CARICOM to address existing tariffs.

Jagdeo explained at his weekly press conference that the removal of the Common External Tariff (CET) requires notification to CARICOM, as the CET is imposed on goods imported from outside the region. He emphasized that this engagement would target sanitary products for women, as well as for elderly persons and children.
While VAT on sanitary products was eliminated in 2017, Jagdeo noted that other tariffs still apply to items like pads and pampers, which are often imported from outside CARICOM.
President Ali, at a recent rally, reiterated the government’s commitment to investing in women’s health by removing taxes on essential sanitary supplies, stating, “We believe in you.”
