Outcry for Justice Following Tragic Death of Teacher

  • News

News Source Guyana Reports : The nation is mourning the loss of 26-year-old Jenel Pollydore, a young teacher who was tragically killed by her ex-partner, Shaka Phillips. Simona Broomes, the Presidential Candidate for the Assembly for Liberty and Prosperity (ALP), has called for accountability from the Guyana Police Force and the Ministry of Human Services.

Broomes emphasized that despite clear signs of self-harm and abusive behavior exhibited by Phillips, sufficient measures were not taken to protect Pollydore, who was a mother of three. Broomes met with Pollydore’s family over the weekend, where they expressed their frustration over the police’s failure to act on her repeated complaints about threats from her ex-partner, even after she had obtained a restraining order.

In an interview with News Source, Broomes stated, “All of the signs were there, but were simply ignored.” She highlighted that the system should have intervened earlier, especially given Pollydore’s reports of Phillips’ suicidal behavior and self-harm.

Broomes criticized the police’s response to Pollydore’s situation, stating, “The police made a mockery of the situation,” and underscored the need for effective systems to protect victims of domestic abuse. She pointed out that Pollydore not only filed complaints but also secured a restraining order, which was allegedly breached without adequate follow-up by law enforcement.

In a statement, the Guyana Police Force revealed that during questioning, Phillips confessed to shooting Pollydore twice outside a wedding reception at a Linden hotel after an argument over her refusal to answer his calls. Following the incident, he reportedly disposed of the firearm in the Demerara River.

Broomes concluded by asserting that if the police had taken Pollydore’s situation seriously, she would still be alive today, emphasizing the urgent need for systemic change to protect vulnerable individuals from domestic violence.
