Pensioner on Bail for $1.75M House Lot Fraud

  • News

Big Smith News Watch Reports : A 72-year-old pensioner from North Ruimveldt, Georgetown, was granted $100,000 bail after being charged with obtaining $1.75 million under false pretenses. Norman Phillips pleaded not guilty in Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.

The charge alleges that on December 27, 2024, Phillips defrauded Lawrence Lorimer by falsely claiming he could secure a house lot. His attorney stated that Phillips is a pensioner with no convictions and suffers from medical issues. She noted that he has been cooperating with police and is in discussions to repay the amount.

Despite objections from the prosecutor regarding the seriousness of the offense and Phillips’ previous court matters, Magistrate Annette Singh granted bail and scheduled a follow-up for August 20, 2025, to discuss the first repayment.

Phillips has a history of legal issues, including a 2017 case involving the theft of over $2 million in property and a 2012 charge for fraudulently obtaining $170,000 from an overseas individual. The outcomes of those cases remain unclear.
