Aubrey Norton, leader of the People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR), addressed concerns regarding the recent resignation of Jermaine Figueira, dismissing claims that Figueira was sidelined and labeling him as incompetent.

Figueira, a prominent figure in the PNCR, resigned last weekend, joining a growing list of party members who have departed. Despite this, Norton stated at a press conference that such resignations are unlikely to negatively impact the party ahead of the upcoming General and Regional Elections on September 1.
Responding to questions from reporters, Norton focused on Figueira’s performance, particularly in Region 10, where he felt Figueira had underperformed, especially during the last Local Government Elections. Norton also expressed dissatisfaction with Figueira’s role as the shadow Minister of Culture, Youth, and Sport, asserting that these factors justified his removal from that position.
“We don’t consider him a heavyweight because the work that was required as a party in Region 10 wasn’t being done,” Norton remarked. He emphasized that Figueira’s exit was more related to competence than any notion of being sidelined.
However, the PNCR has faced criticism and resignations from several members who feel marginalized within the party. Many have expressed concerns about being overlooked despite their dedication and contributions.
Figueira’s resignation was rooted in his discontent with what he described as the party’s “troubling tolerance for rising ethnic antagonism.” He criticized the PNCR for drifting away from its foundation of inclusive nationalism and accused the leadership of fostering a culture of “sycophancy and vindictiveness,” where loyal members are sidelined in favor of political insiders.
Despite these challenges, Norton remains confident in the party’s strength, asserting that it will retain support in light of the recent exodus of members.
