Police Intercept Minibus, Arrest Passenger with Suspected Cannabis

At approximately 2:00 PM today (Wednesday), officers from the Lethem Police Station acted on received intelligence and intercepted a minibus (number BAD 6117) on the Annai-Lethem Trail. The vehicle, driven by Andel Awar, was carrying six passengers, including one female Guyanese and five males—four Brazilians and one Guyanese.

Upon intercepting the minibus, the police informed the driver and passengers about the information they had received. The group consented to a search but requested that it be conducted at the Lethem Police Station due to the extreme heat on the trail. The minibus was subsequently escorted to the station by two detectives.

Once at the Lethem Police Station compound, the passengers retrieved their bags and belongings, and officers proceeded to search both the individuals and their luggage.

During the search, one passenger, Sedney Aubrey Johnson, known as ‘Cooliebai,’ a 24-year-old construction worker from Hope Estate, East Coast Demerara, was found in possession of a blue and grey haversack. Inside, officers discovered three parcels wrapped in transparent plastic. Upon inspection, the parcels were found to contain a quantity of leaves, seeds, and stems suspected to be cannabis.

Johnson was cautioned, arrested, and placed into police custody. The cannabis was weighed and totaled 1,478 grams.
