Police ranks in Regional Division #7 are investigating the discovery of a quantity of suspected cannabis found on Friday at the Itaballi Police Checkpoint in Region Seven (Cuyuni – Mazaruni).

According to a release from Police Headquarters, officers were performing their duties at the checkpoint when a motor pick-up, registration number GVV 3523, arrived at approximately 7:15 AM en route to Black Water Backdam. The vehicle was driven by a 47-year-old male from Bartica, who was accompanied by two miners aged 51 and 31.
During routine searches of the occupants and the vehicle, police examined the clothing of the 51-year-old miner from Buxton, East Coast Demerara. In his pants pocket, they discovered a bulky transparent plastic bag containing leaves, seeds, and stems suspected to be cannabis.
The 51-year-old miner was arrested and taken to the Itaballi Police Outpost along with the suspected narcotics, where he remains in custody. The cannabis, which weighed 16.4 grams, was weighed in his presence and has been logged as the investigation continues.
