News

Authorities are investigating a tragic workplace incident that claimed the life of 28-year-old Dayrovis Martinez Mendoza, a Cuban national and construction worker, at a private property in Bachelor’s Adventure Railway Embankment, East Coast Demerara.

The incident occurred around 11:30 AM today. Enquiries revealed that Xie Guohui, a 49-year-old Chinese businessman, had entered into a 40-year lease agreement with property owner Carlos Paul on October 7, 2024, to build a supermarket and residential quarters. Guohui stated that construction began approximately two months ago and was personally supervising the project. He reported hiring six Spanish-speaking laborers but did not record their names.

On the day of the accident, Guohui was feeling unwell and was not present on-site when he received a call around 11:50 AM about the collapse of a fence wall. He described the eastern fence as being about 15 feet high and 120 feet long but was unable to provide details on the cause of the collapse.

Eyewitnesses reported that several workers were at the site when the wall suddenly fell, trapping Mendoza beneath the rubble. Emergency services arrived and worked to free him, but sadly, he was pronounced dead at the scene. A search of the area confirmed that no other individuals were trapped.

Minister of Labour and Manpower, Honourable Keoma Griffith, along with Mr. Roydon Croal, Assistant Chief Occupational Health and Safety Officer, later conducted a site inspection. Mendoza’s body was removed by undertakers from Memorial Gardens Funeral Home, where it awaits a post-mortem examination.

The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the accident is ongoing.
