33-Year-Old Essequibo Resident Drowned at Lake Capoey

Police in Regional Division #2 are investigating the alleged drowning of Mortimer Sooknanan, a 33-year-old labourer from Queenstown, Essequibo Coast. The incident occurred over the weekend at Capoey Lake.

Enquiries revealed that on Saturday, August 2, 2025, at approximately 11:00 AM, Mortimer, along with his 30-year-old brother Naitram Sooknanan and two friends, were at the lake consuming alcohol.

According to Naitram, around 1:30 PM, they were all swimming when he observed Mortimer emerge from the water and sit on a bench in the boat landing area. However, by 2:00 PM, Mortimer was no longer visible, prompting the group to search for him without success.

Naitram and other relatives returned to the lake at around 8:00 AM on Sunday, where they resumed the search and ultimately found Mortimer’s body submerged in the water.

Detectives who examined the body noted what appeared to be fish bites on his neck, back, and left ear. The body was retrieved from the water and escorted to Suddie Public Hospital, where a doctor pronounced him dead on arrival.

The body is currently at the Suddie Public Hospital Mortuary, awaiting a post-mortem examination. Investigations are ongoing.
