Police : Speed Cameras Now Monitor Illegal Third-Lane Driving

News

In a significant move to enhance road safety, the Guyana Police Force (GPF), in collaboration with the National Data Management Authority (NDMA), has launched a new enforcement capability under the Safe Road Intelligent System (SRIS). This system automatically detects and flags illegal third-lane driving—a hazardous practice that has been a source of congestion and public frustration on the nation’s roadways.

Leveraging advanced video analytics, the upgraded SRIS can identify vehicles that misuse inside lanes to bypass traffic. The technology captures high-definition video evidence, which includes vehicle speed, lane position, and license plate information. This data will serve as evidence for the GPF to pursue charges against dangerous driving behaviors.

Public concern regarding motorists abusing turning lanes to create an unofficial “third lane”—especially during peak traffic times—has persisted for years. Such actions not only lead to collisions and near-misses but also contribute significantly to gridlock for law-abiding drivers.

The introduction of this enforcement feature aims to address these complaints by providing officers with reliable, real-time evidence, allowing for decisive and consistent action against offenders. Currently, the SRIS platform monitors over 100 lanes of traffic, with plans for additional locations to be implemented in the coming months. By utilizing automated detection, the system enhances the GPF’s ability to enforce traffic laws without the need for physical police presence at every intersection.

“This upgrade is another step toward a safer, more disciplined traffic environment,” stated Traffic Chief Senior Superintendent Mahendra Singh. “Technology allows us to enforce fairly and effectively, while reducing congestion and improving the daily commute for thousands of Guyanese.”

This initiative is part of a broader national effort to modernize traffic management through smart, data-driven systems. The GPF encourages all motorists to exercise caution, adhere to designated lanes, and support ongoing efforts to create a safer and more efficient road network.
