Political Activist Kevon Lorrimer Delays Sentencing After Fraud Conviction

News Source Guyana Reports : Over two weeks after being found guilty of fraud and sentenced to nine months in prison, political activist Kevon Lorrimer has yet to begin serving his sentence. The sentence was handed down in his absence, and he was taken into custody by police in Linden on Monday. Since then, he has remained in police custody, with sources indicating he may be transferred to the prison authorities by tomorrow.

Reports suggest there may have been political maneuvering to postpone Lorrimer’s handover to prison. Senior police officials have not provided explanations for the delay, and attempts to reach the Commissioner of Police for comment went unanswered.

Paul Slowe, a retired Assistant Police Commissioner and former Chairman of the Police Service Commission, expressed concerns over the situation in a social media post. He noted that once a commitment warrant is issued by the court, the individual must be handed over to prison authorities to begin serving their sentence. Slowe emphasized that no government official or senior police officer has the authority to alter this process, suggesting that the delay may indicate corruption.

Lorrimer was charged with Obtaining by False Pretenses on February 3, 2025. His trial took place on June 19, 2025, at the Linden Magistrate’s Court, where he was convicted and sentenced to nine months in jail following his non-appearance.

As the situation develops, questions remain regarding the transparency of the legal proceedings and the implications of any political influence in this case.
