Political Analyst Praises Aubrey Norton’s Strategic Moves Amidst Party Turmoil

Political commentator Ruel Johnson has lauded Aubrey Norton for what he describes as a “masterstroke of politics,” following recent developments within the People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR). Johnson asserts that Norton’s actions represent one of the most significant political maneuvers seen this election season.

Since announcing his ambition for PNCR leadership post-2020, Norton has faced considerable internal opposition, including delays in assuming his role as Leader of the Opposition after winning the party leadership. Criticism from within his own ranks, particularly from Brigadier Batts, has intensified as Norton sought re-election as party leader.

According to Johnson, a conspiracy emerged to undermine Norton’s leadership, promoting the narrative that he was “unpopular and unelectable,” despite having won leadership of the second-largest political party in Guyana. He suggests that this effort was orchestrated by factions within the PNCR and the Alliance For Change (AFC), aiming to establish a coalition that would marginalize Norton.

In a surprising turn, Norton has effectively countered these strategies by securing support from notable younger parliamentarians within the AFC, including Juretha Fernandes, Sherod Duncan, and Ricky Ramsaroop. Johnson notes that this swift move has shifted the narrative away from the AFC’s attempts to portray Norton as weak.

The recent resignation of Amanza Walton-Desir from the AFC and the subsequent negotiations for her new party have been overshadowed by Norton’s strategic gains. Johnson argues that Norton’s ability to leak information about coalition negotiations has turned AFC tactics against them, highlighting a shift in political momentum.

As the political landscape continues to evolve, Johnson concludes that Norton’s leadership may require dismantling certain elements within the PNCR to ultimately strengthen the party. “Aubrey clearly realizes that to save the PNC, he may have to destroy it,” Johnson stated, emphasizing the complexity of the current political climate.
