PPP/C Considers Extending Local Content Law to Mining Sector

  • News

The governing People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) has announced plans to explore extending the Local Content Act, which currently benefits the oil and gas sector, to the mining industry if re-elected on September 1.

This pledge, part of the party’s 2025 manifesto launched at the Pegasus Corporate Centre, comes as gold and bauxite mining undergoes significant development. The Local Content Act mandates that oil companies source goods and services locally and hire Guyanese workers.

Expanding the law to mining would align with the PPP/C’s commitment to partner with private investors for new mining projects, create jobs, and improve access to mining areas by upgrading roads and airstrips. The manifesto also assures operators that the current favorable fiscal regime will remain unchanged, with no increases in royalties or taxes on heavy equipment.

Additionally, the PPP/C aims to support the expansion of bauxite projects and revive mining at abandoned sites, while also fostering growth in quarry stone and sand production to meet construction demand.
