General Secretary of the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C), Bharrat Jagdeo, announced that the party will officially launch its campaign for the 2025 General and Regional Elections in early July. This disclosure was made during a press conference held on Thursday at Freedom House on Robb Street.

Jagdeo stated, “We will launch our campaign in early July. You’ll hear more about that.” President Irfaan Ali will lead the PPP’s List of Candidates for the elections scheduled for September 1, 2025. Political parties must submit their Lists of Candidates on Nomination Day, July 14, 2025.
The PPP General Secretary revealed that the party is currently involved in an intensive vetting process for its candidates, given the high level of interest within the party. “We are currently in the process of vetting candidates, and that is a major undertaking in a party where you often have 400 or 500 people wanting to get on the list,” he explained. Jagdeo emphasized the importance of a democratic approach in this process, consulting with party activists and supporters across all 10 regions.
He also criticized other political parties, alleging that some are struggling to fill their lists and resorting to questionable tactics to secure candidates and backers. “We are getting our list of backers using the GECOM-prescribed form, which has a declaration at the top that you are knowingly signing to support a particular political party,” Jagdeo noted. He highlighted concerns about past practices where some parties collected signatures on blank sheets, causing confusion among individuals about their support.
In response, the APNU Coalition recently condemned the PPP for allegedly intimidating individuals who supported their list. They claimed that PPP agents threatened supporters with job loss if they did not withdraw their signatures. The APNU stated, “These acts of desperation by the PPP must be promptly denounced by all Guyanese. We must not allow these acts to escalate.”
As the campaign season heats up, the PPP is focusing on ensuring a transparent and compliant process, while the opposition continues to voice its concerns over electoral integrity.
