PPP Councillor Dismisses APNU’s ‘Free House Lot’ Promise as Political Gimmick

  • News

People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) Councillor Kevin Dey has strongly criticized the opposition’s recent pledge to provide “free house lots,” calling it a mere political ploy. Dey argued that if the promise were genuine, it would have been included in the opposition’s manifesto.

Speaking at a public meeting hosted by the PPP/C on Saturday, Dey was the first to address the claims made by A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) regarding the distribution of house lots to applicants earning less than $400,000 per month. This announcement was made by APNU’s Vice-Presidential candidate, Ganesh Mahipaul, shortly after the launch of the coalition’s manifesto, which notably did not mention such a policy.

“The opposition is lying to people,” Dey asserted. “If they were serious about free house lots, it would have been in their manifesto. They had five years in office and denied ordinary families the chance to own land. Now, weeks before an election, they suddenly want to promise what they never delivered.”

Dey shared his personal experience of applying for a house lot during the previous APNU+AFC administration, recalling being told there was no land available. “But after 2020, under the PPP, it was like a magic trick — suddenly, house lots were everywhere, and thousands of families were given the opportunity to own their own homes,” he noted.

He accused the coalition of attempting to take credit for initiatives that the PPP/C government has already implemented, including large-scale house lot distributions and social programs like free CXC examinations. Dey reflected on how he had to pay for his exams as a student, contrasting that with today’s students who benefit from free educational support.

On the topic of healthcare, Dey highlighted the return of residents to Guyana for treatment that was once unavailable locally. “My own father-in-law came back just to fix his teeth. That’s the kind of progress we’re seeing. Guyana is moving forward under the PPP, and people recognize the difference,” he added.

Concluding his remarks, Dey urged citizens not to be misled by empty promises and encouraged them to vote for continued progress. “The choice is clear — the PPP/C delivers, and with the kind of development we’re seeing, it’s going to be a landslide victory,” he declared.
