President Ali Addresses Progress on Infrastructure Projects in Region Six

President Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali has emphasized the need for efficient service delivery in the construction of bridges along the main New Amsterdam Road. During a community engagement at the State House, he expressed frustration with contractors who have not made sufficient progress on these vital infrastructure projects.

The President announced that the Ministry of Finance will take action against these contractors, stating, “Excuses are no longer acceptable.” He noted that liquidated damages had not yet been imposed, despite delays, and indicated that some contractors appear disengaged from completing the work.

To address these issues, the finance secretary and procurement head have been directed to ensure that contractors who are lagging will not be awarded new projects until they fulfill their current obligations. Furthermore, the finance secretary will investigate the management of the project by engineers to determine if any administrative action is necessary.

“There is no excuse anymore. We pay for services from the government, and those services must be delivered efficiently,” President Ali reiterated, affirming the administration’s commitment to accountability and performance.

The government is currently undertaking significant infrastructural projects in the region, including the construction of a US$604 million highway from Palmyra to Moleson Creek, which is set to improve commuting for thousands. The plans also include a new Berbice River Bridge and a new bridge across the Corentyne River, as part of a broader industrialization agenda.

President Ali is on a two-day outreach in Region Six, during which he will hold 47 community meetings to ensure that all citizens receive equitable service. He is accompanied by cabinet ministers and government officials for these engagements.
