President Ali Addresses Vendor Restrictions at Corriverton Municipal Market

News

President Irfaan Ali took decisive action on Friday by directly addressing a long-standing issue at the Corriverton Municipal Market. He criticized the existing 4 PM cutoff time that restricts vendors from bringing in their produce and goods after that hour, describing the rule as nonsensical and urging its immediate removal.

During a community outreach event attended by many residents, President Ali emphasized that vendors should not be hindered in their efforts to earn a livelihood. He demanded a clear explanation for the existence of such a restriction and warned that anyone obstructing its repeal should face consequences.

“It must be fixed,” President Ali asserted. “A public notice must be in front of the market so that no Lord or individuals who believe they are Lords can change that notice here at the market. That’s absolutely ridiculous.”

The President reminded regional and municipal officials of their role to assist and support the community, rather than frustrate their efforts. “Our job is to support and help people,” he emphasized, calling for immediate corrective measures.

In addition to addressing this specific concern, President Ali announced that the Ministry of Local Government has been tasked with conducting a nationwide review of markets. The aim is to identify gaps, ensure accountability, and eliminate practices that disadvantage small vendors and consumers.
