President Dr. Irfaan Ali has unveiled plans for Guyanese to soon apply online for essential government documents, including police clearances and birth and death certificates. This initiative is part of the administration’s comprehensive digitization agenda aimed at modernizing public services.

In his first press conference of his second term, President Ali emphasized the need for a “common framework and common system” across state agencies to enhance efficiency, transparency, and accessibility. “Our goal is to have this happen by the second quarter of 2026,” he stated. “We want government services to be faster, easier, and more transparent.”

The digitization effort will be led by the Chief Technology Officer, with support from the National Data Management Authority (NDMA). A survey assessing the digital readiness of public and private sectors has already been conducted. “We met with all IT heads recently, and we are moving this forward with a clear focus,” the President noted.

President Ali also highlighted the importance of the private sector keeping pace with digitization, stating, “The private sector will also need to advance at a similar pace.”

A central aspect of this transformation is ensuring that every citizen has a bank account, which the President called the gateway to broader opportunities, including fintech adoption. He stressed the significance of promoting the use of cards over checks for greater transparency and traceability.

Describing digitization as crucial to Guyana’s development agenda, President Ali said it will enable seamless access to services and boost economic competitiveness. “Digitization is about making life easier for people while building a system that is transparent, reliable, and efficient,” he affirmed.

With plans to implement this framework by 2026, Guyanese can look forward to a significant transformation in government-citizen interactions, ushering in a new era of public service delivery.
