President Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali met with United States Secretary of Energy Chris Wright on Friday to discuss enhancing cooperation in the energy sector and positioning Guyana as a key player in regional energy security and industrial development. The engagement took place ahead of the ‘Shield of the Americas Summit’ scheduled for the same day.

During the meeting, President Ali presented Guyana’s ambitious plans to expand its energy footprint through the development of its petroleum and natural gas resources. In a video shared on his social media, he emphasized that Guyana’s energy sector offers opportunities to support broader economic development, including investments in manufacturing, fertilizer production, data centers, and industrial expansion.
“The Secretary is very keen on the development in Guyana and the opportunities there. So I think it was a great meeting,” President Ali remarked.
The president highlighted the potential for Guyana to take an early role in developing infrastructure capable of accommodating natural gas from regional partners. Secretary Wright underlined that the U.S. administration is prioritizing the development of energy and other natural resources across the region, marking Guyana as an essential player due to its expanding oil and gas sector and stable governance.
“Guyana is a huge part of this strategy, a very well-governed country with great energy resources that’s starting to produce them and grow larger and larger. That’s a win for Guyana, a win for the United States, and a win for the Western Hemisphere,” Wright noted.
The two leaders also explored opportunities to bolster state-to-state partnerships and increase U.S. investment in Guyana’s burgeoning energy sector. President Ali was accompanied by Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Hugh Todd, Foreign Secretary Robert Persaud, and Colonel Sheldon Howell, Director of the National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA).
