At the 56th Republic Anniversary Flag Raising Ceremony held at Public Buildings, Brickdam, President Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali reaffirmed the government’s commitment to safeguarding Guyana’s territorial integrity and national security. He emphasized that a nation cannot thrive while living in fear of territorial disputes.

In his address, President Ali stated that the sanctity of Guyana’s borders is of the utmost importance, asserting, “Let no one be mistaken: history and international law are on our side. Our borders are sacred, and we will defend them.” He also highlighted the government’s formation of a premier legal team dedicated to defending the validity of the 1899 Arbitral Award at the International Court of Justice.
This resolute stance is further supported by significant increases in resources allocated to the joint services, which remain vigilant against any threats to the nation’s borders. President Ali noted that this proactive approach to sovereignty is critical to national security, pointing out a nearly 50% decline in serious crime between 2021 and 2025. He reported that annual crime averages have decreased from 2,827 incidents to just 1,441, with armed robberies and burglaries experiencing even sharper reductions.
“While we still have much work to do on the security front, the indisputable reality is that our Republic is not just growing wealthier; it is growing safer, proving that development and security are two sides of the same sovereign coin,” President Ali remarked, reinforcing the connection between improving national security and fostering economic growth.
The ceremony served as a platform for President Ali to not only celebrate the nation’s achievements but also to rally support for ongoing efforts to enhance Guyana’s safety and sovereignty.
