President Dr. Irfaan Ali Critiques Opposition Coalition Ahead of Elections

As internal fractures deepen within Guyana’s main opposition coalition, President Dr. Irfaan Ali has dismissed the APNU+AFC as a “coalition of incompetence” and “undemocratic forces” unfit to lead the country.

Speaking on Wednesday at the launch of Orinduik Marine Services, President Ali delivered a scathing critique of the opposition’s failure to unite, referencing both past actions and their current disarray.

“These are the same people who tried to rig an election, the same individuals who claimed 32 was greater than 33,” he remarked, alluding to the contentious 2020 electoral crisis that plunged Guyana into months of political uncertainty.

The President highlighted the economic turmoil caused during the previous administration, stating, “They destroyed the economy for five years—sent home sugar workers, almost shocked the rice industry, and let our country into disaster.”

He characterized the opposition’s current approach as a “run for power” rather than a credible, policy-driven campaign, focused instead on “hate, division, and racism.”

“They are stuck in the past. They’re not part of coaliting the future of Guyana,” President Ali asserted.

Contrasting the turmoil within the opposition, Dr. Ali claimed that the PPP/C has emerged as the true unifying force, emphasizing his party’s record of delivering clear policies and results for the Guyanese people.

“When people compare where they were under APNU+AFC and where they are today, they are making an analytical, clear decision—and that is what is driving so many to gravitate to the PPP,” he explained.

The President addressed the apparent openness of his party to welcome former opposition members, including high-profile defectors who have shifted their support to the PPP/C.

“Forgiveness is a part of moving forward,” he stated, noting that those individuals are now advocating for a platform that promotes democracy and the rule of law.

While acknowledging potential discomfort among long-time PPP/C supporters, President Ali maintained that the party’s philosophy of inclusivity and national unity takes precedence over concerns about political opportunism.

“The PPP has always been about building a national front—bringing together people of every class, every race, every religion. That philosophy is winning,” he asserted.

As the elections approach, President Ali expressed confidence in his party’s focus on “prosperity, opportunity, and unity,” while criticizing the opposition’s inability to formulate a cohesive plan or strategy.

“The PPP will go again into government,” he concluded.
