President Irfaan Ali announced ambitious plans to enhance support for part-time workers in his second term during a rally on Wednesday night. He emphasized the government’s commitment to providing job opportunities and skills training to boost the long-term earning potential of families, particularly in rural areas.

Launched in 2022, the part-time employment program aims to empower individuals, allowing them to transition from part-time roles to full-time jobs and even business ownership. “Our plan is not to keep you at one level; we want our part-time workers to graduate to owning businesses and getting into full-time jobs so they can get better,” he stated.
Region Six has been a significant beneficiary of this initiative, employing thousands in various community roles. President Ali urged attendees not to forget who initiated the program, warning against other political parties making similar promises without a proven track record. “The thousands of women who never had an opportunity to earn but today are earning on the part-time programme; today they [other parties] come to tell you that they will give you more,” he noted.
Highlighting the importance of women in the workforce, Ali announced plans to construct childcare centers in every region to support working mothers. “We cannot let young professionals limit their potential; we will build childcare-friendly centers to support the enhancement of our society and country,” he said.
Additionally, Ali reiterated the government’s commitment to providing educational grants, contrasting his administration’s initiatives with those of opposition parties. He emphasized a broader vision for Berbice, promising to decentralize government services in the region, construct a stadium, and invest in training for educational and health professionals. He also mentioned infrastructure projects, including a four-lane highway from New Amsterdam to Moleson Creek, and rebuilding the Berbice River bridge.
“We have a clear plan of building and transferring wealth to every single household so everyone can have a better standard of living,” Ali concluded, urging supporters to vote for the PPP/C on September 1.
