As tensions rise between the United States and neighboring Venezuela, President Dr. Irfaan Ali, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, has reassured the public about a comprehensive defense strategy designed to protect Guyana and its citizens in the face of potential escalation.

Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of an event at the Office of the President on Wednesday, Ali responded to inquiries regarding the nation’s safeguards against any fallout from the geopolitical strains between Washington and Caracas.
“I would not publicly disclose our defense strategy, but I can assure you that, with our international partners, we have developed a comprehensive defense plan and strategy for our country over the years,” the President stated.
Ali expressed confidence in this strategy, emphasizing the capability of the Guyana Defence Force and the importance of partnerships with international allies. “I have confidence in our men and women in uniform, in the leadership of the Guyana Defence Force, and in our partnerships,” he added.
He reiterated the government’s priority regarding citizen safety, particularly for Guyanese residing in Venezuela and elsewhere. “The safety and security of our country and citizens is always paramount. We have many Guyanese who have returned home from Venezuela due to the situation there. Whatever support is needed for those feeling the need to return home for safety, they can expect the Government’s support,” President Ali assured.
Just two weeks prior, he highlighted the ongoing threats and aggression posed by the Nicolás Maduro regime, which has made unfounded claims over a significant portion of Guyana’s territory, including the oil-rich Essequibo region and parts of the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).
The U.S. Government is currently conducting extensive military operations off the Venezuelan coast to combat transnational crime and the illicit drug trade, an initiative that the Ali administration has fully endorsed.
“We have a unique situation in Guyana. Recently, Venezuelans were charged for terrorist activities here that resulted in a tragic loss of life. We must manage an active threat from Venezuela concerning our sovereignty,” Ali explained. “My responsibility is to keep Guyanese safe and to collaborate with our allies in this endeavor. I will continue to work closely with all our partners.”
He also expressed strong opposition to drug trafficking, stating, “My Administration has absolutely no sympathy for drug traffickers. Tens of thousands, millions of lives are destroyed, and economies are devastated by smuggling.”
Ali further asserted the importance of democracy and the rule of law in the region, advocating for a society where freedom is honored and maintained. “We view our region as one where democracy must thrive, and we support the region being a zone of peace,” he concluded.
