President Proposes Relocation of Demerara Harbour Bridge to Enhance Connectivity

At the commissioning ceremony of the new Ogle to Eccles Highway on Monday, President Dr. Irfaan Ali announced the possibility of moving the existing Demerara Harbour Bridge downriver to connect Timehri, East Bank Demerara, to Sandhills.

“Right now, we have the engineers examining the feasibility of relocating the old Demerara Harbour Bridge to create a connection between Timehri and the Sandhills Road,” President Ali stated. He emphasized that if this venture proves feasible, it would open up another route to Guyana’s interior regions.

The government is simultaneously progressing with the construction of a new Demerara Harbour Crossing, a four-lane high-span bridge designed to alleviate traffic congestion. This new structure is expected to be completed by August 31, 2025.

As construction on the new bridge advances, various options for the productive use of the existing floating bridge are being explored, ensuring that it continues to serve the needs of the community effectively.
