Private Sector Commission Affirms Credibility of September 1 Elections

News

The Private Sector Commission (PSC) has issued a robust statement reaffirming that the General and Regional Elections held on September 1, 2025, were free, fair, and credible. The PSC expressed concern over attempts to undermine the legitimacy of the electoral process through selective and misleading interpretations of the European Union Election Observation Mission’s (EU EOM) preliminary report.

The PSC emphasized that the EU’s findings clearly indicated that Election Day was peaceful, orderly, and efficiently managed, with professional polling staff and transparent procedures. The report noted that voting and counting were positively assessed, and Statements of Poll were displayed publicly in full compliance with the law.

While acknowledging the EU’s recommendations for future reforms in areas such as campaign finance, media balance, and the structure of GECOM, the PSC stressed that these do not constitute evidence of fraud or challenge the legitimacy of the election outcomes.

Moreover, esteemed observer groups, including the Carter Center, the Commonwealth Observer Group, and CARICOM, also confirmed that Election Day was both peaceful and credible, with none disputing the integrity of the electoral process or the legitimacy of the results.

The PSC asserted that the 2025 elections accurately reflected the will of the Guyanese people, labeling any misrepresentation of the EU report as misleading and untrue.

In conclusion, the PSC reiterated its commitment to collaborating with local and international partners to advance electoral reform and to ensure public confidence in Guyana’s democracy.
