Regional : Former Bahamian Diplomat Angela Missouri Sherman-Peter Passes Away in New York

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of The Bahamas has announced with deep sadness the passing of Her Excellency Angela Missouri Sherman-Peter, ODC, in New York City, surrounded by her loved ones.

Ambassador Sherman-Peter had a distinguished diplomatic and public service career spanning several decades. She served in numerous high-profile roles including Consul General in New York, Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations, High Commissioner to Canada, and Non-Resident High Commissioner to Zimbabwe. She was also appointed Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary and Special Envoy.

At the Commonwealth Secretariat, she served as Assistant Director in the Political Affairs Division from 1994 to 1997. Her contributions to the United Nations were significant, notably serving as Chef de Cabinet to the President of the fifty-eighth session of the General Assembly from 2003 to 2004.

In addition to her diplomatic service, she held senior positions in public administration, including Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Office of the Attorney General, and Ministry of National Security.

Her final diplomatic post before retirement was as Ambassador and Permanent Observer for the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) to the United Nations.

In 2024, in recognition of her service, she was awarded the Order of Distinction by Her Excellency the Most Honorable Cynthia Pratt, Governor General of The Bahamas, during the Independence Day honours.

The Ministry expressed heartfelt condolences to her family, friends, and colleagues on her passing.
