Regional Police Division Five Sees Nearly 50% Reduction in Crime for 2025

News

Regional Police Division Five (Mahaica-Berbice) reported a remarkable 49.9% reduction in overall crime for 2025, alongside significant improvements in road safety. This information was presented by Divisional Commander Senior Superintendent Lonsdale Withrite during the Division’s Annual Christmas Breakfast and Awards Ceremony held at the Regional Police Headquarters in Fort Wellington.

Key Statistics and Achievements

Commander Withrite highlighted that the reduction in crime reflects the efficacy of sustained intelligence-led policing and disciplined implementation of the Guyana Police Force’s (GPF) Strategic Plan 2022–2026. He emphasized that consistent enforcement, targeted operations, and improved supervisory oversight have contributed to measurable public safety gains across communities within the division.

Traffic statistics further illustrated positive trends:

  • A 5% reduction in traffic accidents.
  • A significant 55% decrease in road fatalities, which Withrite described as one of the year’s most notable achievements. He attributed this success to intensified traffic enforcement, sustained public education campaigns, and targeted road safety operations in high-risk areas.

Enhanced Policing Capacity

The commander noted that the improved crime and traffic outcomes can be linked to the division’s expanded operational capacity over the year. This includes the construction of three new police stations and upgrades to several existing facilities, enhancing both public service delivery and working conditions for officers.

Further enhancing mobility and reducing response times were the additions of:

  • One motor car and six motorcycles.
  • A 12-seater boat, significantly strengthening riverine policing capabilities, allowing for more effective patrols along the Mahaica, Mahaicony, and Abary rivers.

Training and Community Partnerships

Commander Withrite also highlighted that approximately 40 ranks from the division underwent professional development training in various areas, including station management and supervisory skills. He asserted that this capacity building is vital for sustainable crime reduction, as well-trained officers are better equipped to address emerging threats and community needs.

Strengthened community partnerships played a crucial role in this year’s successes. Collaborations with the Regional Democratic Council (RDC), schools, and civil society organizations focused on early intervention, education, and crime prevention, addressing social conditions that often contribute to criminal activities. These efforts have enhanced trust between the police and the public, improving responsiveness across the region.

Conclusion and Recognition

The ceremony also honored ranks and stakeholders who demonstrated exceptional service and commitment over the past year. Commander Withrite urged members of the division to maintain discipline and professionalism, emphasizing that the sustainability of the reported gains hinges on continued collective efforts.

He concluded by extending season’s greetings to all ranks, their families, and partners, expressing confidence that Regional Police Division Five will continue to build on its positive performance as the region experiences ongoing growth and development.
