Robert Persaud Calls for Protection of the Jaguar from Political Branding

In a recent statement, Robert Persaud, Chairman of the National Protected Areas Commission, addressed the Guyana Elections Commission regarding the use of national symbols in political contexts.

Persaud emphasized the significance of Guyana’s national symbols, which he believes represent the collective history, culture, and pride of all citizens. He cautioned that using these symbols for political gain undermines their intended purpose and risks dividing the population they are meant to unite.

“The Jaguar is more than just a powerful animal; it embodies the resilience and deep-rooted connection of the Guyanese people to their land,” Persaud stated. He highlighted that for generations, the Jaguar has stood as a symbol of national strength and unity. However, he expressed concern that transforming this emblem into a political logo diminishes its shared significance, reducing it to a partisan symbol that represents only a select few.

Persaud remarked, “In Guyana, national symbols carry profound meaning. They tell our stories and deserve our utmost respect.” He urged political entities to refrain from appropriating the Jaguar for political branding, instead advocating for the preservation of national symbols as unifying representations for all Guyanese.

“Let us honor our national symbols by keeping them where they truly belong—with all the people of Guyana,” he concluded.
