Guyana has lost a true legend with the passing of Ron Robinson, a devoted blood donor and pivotal figure in the country’s public health initiatives. This heartfelt tribute came from Dr. Leslie Ramsammy, Guyana’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations and former Minister of Health.

Dr. Ramsammy emphasized Robinson’s immense contributions to the National Blood Transfusion Service (NBTS), where he became an icon for his unwavering dedication to blood donation. Over his lifetime, Robinson donated more than 100 units of blood, earning recognition as a champion blood donor and playing a vital role in promoting voluntary blood donation across the nation.
“With his passing, Guyana has also lost an avid blood donor. Ron was family at the National Blood Transfusion Service,” Dr. Ramsammy said. “He was a simple, humble man, but found a way to quietly and graciously make a difference in the lives of his Guyanese sisters and brothers.”
Reflecting on the transformation of Guyana’s blood donation system during his time as Minister of Health, Dr. Ramsammy noted that the system had previously relied heavily on coercive methods, resulting in fewer than 2,000 units of blood collected annually. However, by 2010, thanks to significant public health efforts and a transition to voluntary donations, annual blood collections had soared past 10,000 units—an achievement to which Robinson’s contributions were critical.
“His communication experience and talents became an asset for public health,” Dr. Ramsammy remarked. “Ron’s major contributions to the education and awareness programs in public health led to a ‘golden era’ for public health’s education and awareness initiatives.”
Robinson’s dedication went beyond blood donation; he tirelessly worked to raise awareness about the importance of voluntary donations, leaving a lasting impact on the community.
A well-known figure in radio, television, and theatre, Robinson was regarded as one of the best in the region. His contributions to the creative arts, especially in Guyana’s “orange” economy, continue to inspire many.
Dr. Ramsammy also highlighted Robinson’s significant presence in the radio industry, noting that he had been a “giant presence” in the lives of many in his generation. “For almost all of my more than 65 years of radio experiences, Ron was a giant presence,” he said.
In closing, Dr. Ramsammy expressed his deep sorrow over the loss, extending condolences to Robinson’s family and friends. “Guyana has lost a legend. I have lost a friend. We pray that Ron walks well in heaven,” he concluded.
