An 18-year-old woman, Alfeia Gidding of Rose Hall, Corentyne, Berbice, was arrested on Thursday, February 12, 2026, after being found in possession of three packs of cannabis at the New Amsterdam Prison.
The discovery occurred following a routine search conducted by prison authorities. The contraband was cleverly hidden within two Gillette Deodorants for Men, which were wrapped in a black plastic bag inside her handbag.
The incident has raised significant concerns regarding smuggling activities in correctional facilities. Nicklon Elliot, the Director of Prisons, stressed the severe repercussions of attempting to introduce contraband into prisons. He urged the public to recognize the potential dangers associated with such actions, emphasizing the risks they pose to themselves, inmates, prison staff, and the wider community.
