A 51-year-old salesman, Sahadeo Jaggernauth, has been granted bail set at $250,000 after being accused of causing the death of a cyclist during a road accident.

Jaggernauth appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Faith McGusty at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts on Wednesday, where he faced charges of causing death by dangerous driving. The incident is alleged to have occurred on July 31 at the intersection of Erwin Street and Woolford Avenue, Georgetown, resulting in the death of Julio Khan, a 36-year-old construction worker and father of two.
Khan, who was riding a bicycle at the time of the collision, hailed from Heathburn Village, East Bank Berbice. Jaggernauth pleaded not guilty to the charges.
During the hearing, attorney-at-law Keoma Griffith, representing Jaggernauth, applied for bail, arguing that Khan was riding recklessly at the time of the accident. Griffith claimed that Jaggernauth had been given permission to cross the roadway by another driver and that the collision resulted from Khan’s maneuvering.
The defense emphasized that Jaggernauth was not speeding and that there was no evidence to suggest otherwise. Griffith noted that his client had been cooperating with investigators and posed no flight risk, highlighting that Jaggernauth had previously been granted $100,000 station bail and had attended court earlier in the week.
Despite objections from the prosecution regarding the seriousness of the charges, Magistrate McGusty granted bail while cautioning Jaggernauth about the importance of attending all future court hearings. The case is set to continue on September 10.
