Senior Counsel Murseline Bacchus Dies at 83

In a Statement from the The Bar Council of the Bar Association of Guyana.

The Bar Council of the Bar Association of Guyana expresses deep regret at the passing of Senior Counsel Murseline Bacchus, aged 83, earlier today.

Mr. Bacchus SC was a pre-eminent lawyer for many years in the ancient county of Berbice and was recognized as one of Guyana’s leading criminal lawyers. He was among the earliest Caribbean-trained law graduates from the University of the West Indies (UWI) and the Hugh Wooding Law School (HWLS). A notable classmate and lifelong friend of former Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) and Chief Justice Ian Chang SC, they together demonstrated that a Caribbean legal education was equivalent to traditional English training, setting a high standard for the generations of Caribbean-trained lawyers that followed.

In January 2020, Mr. Bacchus was appointed Senior Counsel by President David Granger, marking his fiftieth year of practice as an Attorney-at-Law in Guyana this year.

The Bar Council extends its deepest condolences to the family and friends of Mr. Bacchus SC. He leaves behind his wife and four children, including his daughter Patricia Bacchus, Attorney-at-Law, and CEO and Chairperson of Caribbean Containers Inc.

His legacy will live on in the many lives he touched throughout his esteemed career.
