Several Charged with Unlawful Wounding Following Bartica Brawl

A series of charges for unlawful wounding and assault have been filed against several individuals following a brawl at Byderabo, Bartica, on August 27. The incident has resulted in multiple arrests and court appearances.

Among those charged is Albert James, 54, a gold miner from the Four Miles Squatting Area. He was arrested by police on the same day as the incident and faced the Bartica Magistrate’s Court on August 29. James was charged with unlawful wounding in connection with injuries sustained by Alec Ault. He pleaded guilty, receiving a sentence of three months in prison and a fine of $100,000. If he fails to pay the fine, he will serve an additional six months.

Five other individuals—Evelyn Dalgetty, 47; Pauline Smith, 54; Alicia Ault, 26; Atalya Dalgetty, 22; and Serina Williams, 22—were also arrested on August 27. They were charged with assault causing actual bodily harm. The charges were brought by a Detective Corporal from the Bartica Police Station, and all five appeared before His Worship Teriq Mohamed on August 29. They pleaded not guilty and were released on self-bail, with the case adjourned until October 3 for further proceedings. The assault involved 18-year-old Grace James as the victim.

Alec Ault, 24, an excavator operator from Byderabo Road, was also charged with assault causing actual bodily harm against Grace James. He pleaded not guilty during his court appearance and was granted $10,000 bail, with his matter also set for continuation on October 3.

In a related development, Grace James was charged with unlawful wounding for her involvement in the brawl against Alec Ault. She pleaded not guilty and was placed on $20,000 bail. Her case is scheduled for the same court date.

The events surrounding the brawl have raised community concerns, and police continue to investigate the incident.
