Stakeholders Urged to Combat Misinformation Ahead of Upcoming Elections

The Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) has called on all stakeholders to remain vigilant against the spread of misinformation as the country prepares for the General and Regional Elections scheduled for September 1, 2025.

In a press release dated August 6, 2025, GECOM highlighted the concerning trend of false narratives that can distort public perception and undermine the integrity of the electoral process. The commission emphasized the critical role that accurate information plays in ensuring free and fair elections.

GECOM reiterated the importance of public participation in the electoral process, encouraging citizens, political parties, civil society, and the media to actively engage in combating harmful misinformation. The commission pointed out that misinformation can significantly impact voter behavior and the overall electoral landscape.

To assist in this effort, GECOM urged stakeholders to utilize available resources, including the official GECOM website, which provides accurate information about the electoral process and related activities. The commission also stated that it will work diligently to address misinformation and ensure transparency throughout the election period.
