Strong Security Measures Implemented for Venezuelan Migrants

Says Brigadier Khan.

Chief of Defence Staff, Brigadier Omar Khan, has announced that “strong” security measures are now in place to ensure that migrants from Venezuela who are intercepted entering Guyana are properly screened and documented.

“This is disheartening, but while Guyana is approaching this with compassion, we are committed to ensuring safe borders and protecting our territory,” Brigadier Khan stated. He emphasized the importance of rigorous vetting and processing of all Venezuelan migrants.

Brigadier Khan made these remarks during the inaugural episode of the new program “Safeguarding the Nation,” broadcast on Facebook on Tuesday. He highlighted the significant influx of Venezuelan migrants seeking better lives due to the ongoing political and socio-economic crisis in their home country.

“In my visits to the border communities, I have personally witnessed the distress, shame, and loss of dignity experienced by families—women, children, and fathers—seeking refuge in a foreign land,” he noted.

The processing of migrants is being carried out through a multi-agency approach, supported by the Guyana Defence Force (GDF). Brigadier Khan reaffirmed that humanitarian efforts are a core aspect of the GDF’s mission.

“This humanitarian gesture is not uncommon for the GDF. We have participated in over 200 projects providing humanitarian support to local and regional partners,” he added.

As the situation evolves, the GDF remains committed to balancing compassion with the necessity of maintaining national security.
