The small nation of Suriname is in shock following a horrific incident early this morning in which a man brutally stabbed nine people to death on the outskirts of Paramaribo. Among the victims are four of the suspect’s children and another child, as well as an elderly couple and members of another family from the same area.
Authorities reported that two additional individuals, including a teenage child of the suspect, were rushed to the hospital with serious stab wounds and are currently clinging to life. Reports indicate that one child was stabbed more than 40 times.
Police received an emergency call at around 12:23 AM and arrived at the scene to discover the bodies of the nine victims. Upon their arrival, the suspect reportedly attempted to attack the officers with a knife, prompting a response in which he was shot in the legs and subsequently taken into custody.
The identity of the suspect has not yet been released. Investigators revealed that the man had been struggling with psychiatric issues, which had contributed to the breakdown of his marriage. His four children had been left in his care at the time of the attack.
President Jennifer Simons of Suriname extended her condolences to the affected families and the community. She pledged that the government would provide assistance in covering all funeral and related costs in the wake of this tragedy.
As investigations continue, the motive behind the attack remains unclear, leaving the community in a state of disbelief and mourning.
