Police reported that the incident occurred at around 17:30 hrs on Wednesday, March 25, 2026. Investigators said it involved a 35-year-old Chinese businesswoman operating in the Durban Backlands area.

According to initial enquiries, the woman placed a bag containing cash on the front passenger seat of her motor bus. Investigators said the vehicle was left unlocked while she supervised the offloading of a container nearby.

During that time, police allege that a 16-year-old labourer entered the bus and removed the bag, which reportedly contained approximately $7 million Guyana dollars.

CCTV Footage Helps Identify Suspects

Police said investigators quickly obtained CCTV footage from the area, which reportedly showed the suspect entering the vehicle and leaving with the bag.

Acting on the evidence, police officers carried out targeted operations in the community, leading to the recovery of $4,390,000 in Guyanese currency.

Four Suspects in Custody

As part of the probe, four individuals were arrested and are currently in custody at the East La Penitence Police Station, where they are assisting with ongoing investigations:

  • a 16-year-old male
  • a 46-year-old female vendor
  • a 40-year-old female kitchen assistant
  • a 38-year-old male labourer

Police stated that the recovered cash was counted in the suspects’ presence and has since been secured as evidence.

Investigation Ongoing

Authorities said investigations are continuing as they work to recover any remaining funds and determine the full extent of the incident.

The police indicated that the case highlights the increasing role of technology, particularly CCTV surveillance, in supporting modern law enforcement and enabling rapid response. The matter remains under active investigation.
