A 30-year-old taxi driver was released on $20,000 bail on Tuesday following an assault charge that involved causing actual bodily harm.

Leslie Dey, residing at Lot 198 Thomas Street, Kitty, appeared before acting Chief Magistrate Faith McGusty at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court. He is accused of assaulting his reputed wife, Devi Surijban, on July 28, 2025, at Lot 66 Norton Street, Lodge, Georgetown.
Dey initially pleaded guilty with an explanation to the charge. However, after hearing his account, Magistrate McGusty recorded a not guilty plea. In his explanation, Dey described an argument with Surijban during which she allegedly approached him armed with a chopper.
“It wasn’t supposed to reach this far. I tried to take away the chopper, and I held her hands. She sank her nails in my hand, and I bit her hand to take away the blade and hide it,” Dey told the court.
Magistrate McGusty granted bail on the condition that Dey must stay away from Surijban and have no contact with her. The case has been adjourned to August 13, 2025.
